Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story reportedly going to IL with groin injury he's struggled with for weeks

Trevor Story’s difficult 2026 season now includes a trip to the injured list. The Boston Red Sox shortstop is reportedly going on the IL with a groin injury. The team has not yet made an official announcement for the move.

Story, 33, has slogged through a slash average of .206/.244/.303 with three home runs and 19 RBI in 176 plate appearances. He’s been below average defensively as well, according to advanced metrics, credited with -1 Defensive Runs Saved and -2 Outs Above Average. His six errors lead American League shortstops.

The 11-year veteran has struggled with a groin issue through much of the season, according to Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy. He sat out Friday’s 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Atlanta Braves while Andruw Monasterio filled in at shortstop.

“We got in at 3:30 in the morning and we are always monitoring Trev with the groin and making sure he’s good,” Tracy said before Friday’s game. “We felt like today was an appropriate day to give him off.”

The Red Sox did not share a projected timetable for Story’s return. If his absence is longer, Boston could decide to move Marcelo Mayer from second base to his natural position of shortstop, where he played throughout his amateur and minor-league games in the field.

Monasterio, who turns 29 on May 30, has played shortstop in the three games Story has missed during the past three weeks. He’s batting .258/.310/.424 with eight doubles, one homer and nine RBI in 71 PAs this season.

Story is the latest high-profile regular to go on the IL for the Red Sox, joining outfielder Roman Anthony (right wrist sprain) and starting pitcher Garrett Crochet (left shoulder inflammation).

Injuries are part of the reason that the Red Sox have struggled to an 18-26 record going into Saturday’s play. That has them holding last place in the AL East, 11.5 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays and three games out of the league’s third wild-card spot.

In his five seasons with Boston, Story has compiled a .242/.295/.407 slash average with 49 home runs and 205 RBi. He played his previous six MLB seasons with the Colorado Rockies, batting .272/.340/.523 with 148 homers, 180 doubles and 450 RBI.

To fill Story’s place on the roster, Boston called up utility infielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A. In games with Worcester, the 28-year-old slashed .269/.417/.454 with nine doubles, five home runs, 23 RBI and four stolen bases. This will be Sogard’s third major-league stint with Boston.
