The Boston Red Sox have not been a good baseball team this year.
They've been one of the worst offensive teams in the sport, ranking 27th in runs per game, 28th in home runs and 28th in OPS entering play on Monday. They've also been subpar on the mound, ranking below average in ERA and 23rd in FIP.
One area where they've been surprisingly excellent, however, is the field.
After years of defensive struggles under Alex Cora and a slow start to the season, the Red Sox have emerged as one of the best fielding teams in baseball. They rank first in defensive runs saved, second in total zone runs and first in outs above average.

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, their smooth fielding hasn't helped them win many games, as they're 13-21.
While good defense is important and can help win games at the margins, it's not as critical as offense or pitching, where Boston has struggled. Strong defense has been a key part of the team's run prevention strategy, but it's not enough to win games by itself.
Still, it's encouraging that the Red Sox have taken such a massive step forward in this area after years of sloppy fielding. While much of Boston's roster has taken a step back this season, at least it's making progress in the field.
