Thursday was Payton Tolle's first career start against the New York Yankees, and he delivered.
Called up earlier in the day from Triple-A Worcester, Tolle was sensational in his season debut. The 23-year-old lefty, who pitched a little last year, dominated the Yankees over six innings of one-run ball at Fenway Park, racking up 11 strikeouts while allowing just three hits and a walk. He also threw 63 of his 93 pitches for strikes, going toe-to-toe with Cam Schlittler.
Unfortunately for the Boston Red Sox, it wasn't enough. Their slumbering offense continued to sputter, managing only two runs on four hits. Meanwhile, the bullpen immediately surrendered the Red Sox's 2-1 lead after Tolle left.
The result was a frustrating 4-2 loss for Boston and a series sweep for New York, which held the Red Sox to just three runs on 13 hits during their first rivalry series of the season.
In his debut, Payton Tolle pitched six innings, allowing one run, striking out 11 batters, and giving up only three hits and one walk.
The Red Sox were swept by the Yankees in the series, despite Tolle's standout performance in his first start.
Although Tolle's performance was masterful, it did not prevent the Red Sox from losing the game and being swept by the Yankees.

While Boston lost, at least it was a good test and learning experience for Tolle, who's the team's No. 1 prospect.
The rookie rose to the occasion in his season debut, but unfortunately for him, most of his teammates didn't.
