Jarren Duran has spoken in the past about his mental health struggles -- he's spoken about a suicide attempt back in 2022 and he confronted a fan last season who tried to make light of that while heckling him.
Fast-forward to Tuesday night. The Boston Red Sox outfielder grounded out against the Minnesota Twins, when he ran back to the dugout at Target Field... and flipped off toward the stands along the way.
What gives? After Duran made headlines for the gesture, he had an explanation, and if it's true about what he heard, it's pretty awful stuff from a fan.
Per Duran to ESPN: "Somebody just told me to kill myself. I'm used to it at this point, you know? I mean, [expletive] happens. I mean, I'm going to flip somebody off if they say something to me, but it is what it is. I shouldn't react like that, but that kind of stuff is still kind of triggering."
Just awful. There's absolutely no reason to heckle Duran with that given his history.
Here's more from Duran:
"Honestly, it's my fault for talking about my mental health because I kind of brought in the haters. So I've just got to get used to it," Duran said. "I was just trying to hold it in and not really bring that up to the team. I mean, we're trying to win a game. I shouldn't even bring that up to anybody. ... It just happens."
Be better, fans.
