Sonny Gray is expected to return from the injured list to start for the Red Sox on Wednesday. Ranger SuĂĄrez is also a candidate to pitch this weekend after leaving his last start with hamstring tightness.
According to interim manager Chad Tracy, âall things point towardâ veteran Sonny Gray returning from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesdayâs series finale. Boston then plans to pitch rookie lefties Jake Bennett and Connelly Early, in some order, to start its series against Tampa Bay at home. On Saturday, Ranger SuĂĄrez â who left his start Sunday with hamstring tightness â is still a candidate to start. Payton Tolle would then be in line for Sunday against the Rays after a strong start Monday.
As of now, the Red Sox are carrying five healthy starters (Bennett, Early, SuĂĄrez, Tolle and Brayan Bello) with Gray ready to return. They appear to be leaning toward using a six-man rotation, at least for now.
Grayâs return, barring a late setback, will come after he spent the minimum 15 days on the injured list. Gray left his Marathon Monday start with hamstring tightness but felt better in the days after that outing and came out of a three-inning simulated game Friday feeling well. Gray will return to the rotation without having made a rehab start; the Red Sox will need to make a roster move before Wednesday to re-add Gray to the roster.
âRight now, all things point toward Sonny starting,â Tracy said. âWeâre going to talk more about it after the game, but weâre heading in that direction.â

Bennett (in his major league debut) pitched before Early last weekend but itâs possible the Red Sox could flip-flop the two young lefties so that Early pitches Thursday on regular rest and Bennett has a full week between outings like he did in Triple-A. The Red Sox chose not to option Bennett back to the minors in the immediate aftermath of his debut Friday night â and that decision has paid off.
âWith the things that have happened, obviously, having our pitching depth here and guys lined up, thatâs a good thing for us to at least carry on right now until we have to make a decision on that one,â Tracy said.
The biggest question in the rotation mix remains SuĂĄrez, who stayed back in Boston instead of traveling to Detroit for a quick three-game road trip. The Red Sox have avoided putting the lefty on the IL so far and if all goes well, he could be in line to pitch on an extra day of rest Saturday at Fenway. Bello, who followed opener Jovani MorĂĄn on Tuesday, would also be available to pitch Saturday if need be.
âThings are progressing,â Tracy said about SuĂĄrez. âI think weâre still optimistic. Because of where weâre at and when he pitches, thereâs no need for us to have to make a decision on that. Weâll just keep seeing how he progresses over the next couple days before we decide.â
The Red Sox will continue cobbling their rotation together without ace Garrett Crochet, who remains on the injured list with shoulder inflammation. Crochet is in Detroit continuing to build up strength in his shoulder and the Sox are still hopeful his absence wonât be a long one.
âWe actually have some moderate throwing program going on,â Tracy said. âNothing over the top, but he has resumed some throwing.
âNothing imminent here. Weâre just going to progress his throwing as tolerated, take him day-to-day and keep seeing how he responds day-to-day before increasing intensity. He has been throwing a baseball over the last couple of days.â
