Meanwhile, the Germans have announced that Moritz Seider will train with their team to assess his readiness to play in the tournament, which begins next week. Team officials are optimistic enough to already include Seider on their roster.
If you count Cam Talbot who is unlikely to be re-signed and Max Plante, a prize Detroit prospect, and presume Seider will play, the Red Wings may now have seven players at the World Championships.
The others: Lucas Raymond and Albert Johansson are playing for Sweden, while Justin Faulk and Plante will play for USA.
Finnie, 20, could benefit the most from the experience, particularly if Canada makes a run for a medal. The Red Wings are hoping the smooth skating forward can increase his scoring a bit next season.
They continue to be high on his potential.
“When he’s bringing (energy), which is 99% of the time, first-year player, he’s a big factor, a big influence on our team,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said. “The pace he plays with, how he closes on players with and without the puck and his ability to drive pucks to the net… to have put up the numbers he had is actually quite good.”
