Detroit Red Wings goaltender John Gibson left the team’s Thursday night matchup with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Facing the Flyers on home ice in a make or break game for Detroit’s dwindling playoff chances, Gibson and the Red Wings were leading Philadelphia 4-1 when a goal by Porter Martone would cut the Red Wings lead to two midway through the second period. Following an extended timeout, veteran Cam Talbot took to the ice with 9:20 left in the period. Gibson finished the night having stopped 12 of 14 shots.
The former Ducks netminder has started in just about every Red Wings game in the last two months, with Talbot only starting three games since the end of January. The veteran netminder was run into by Flyers defenseman Rasmus Risolainen earlier in the second period, drawing a penalty. However, Gibson stayed in net for the following ten minutes before leaving.
In his first season with the Red Wings, the 32 year old goalie has accumulated a 28-20-4 record across 54 starts with a 2.63 GAA and .904 sv%.
