Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman first opts to emphasize that captain Dylan Larkin brings âa lot of good thingsâ to the team.
âDylan does a lot,â Yzerman said. âWe ask a lot from him.â
That being said, Yzerman doesnât stop there. He goes further into his assessment of the teamâs captain.
âI have no problem saying to you, I expect more from him,â Yzerman added. âI expect more from a lot of our players.â
In Larkinâs case, the first order of business is easily deciphered. He shares a malady that is commonplace on the Red Wings roster. Larkin rarely scores five-on-five goals.
After the calendar turned to 2026, Larkin scored 13 goals in 34 games during the second half of the NHL regular season. He missed seven games through injury.
Of those 13 goals, eight came on the power play, and one was a shorthanded tally. The captain scored just four times at even strength.
The Red Wings GM indicated that he wanted more from the team's captain in terms of performance and leadership.
The captain's performance is crucial as it influences team dynamics and overall success in the NHL.
The captain may address the GM's comments by focusing on improving personal performance and enhancing team leadership.
The GM's expectations could lead to increased pressure on the captain and potentially impact team morale and performance.

Over the course of the season, Larkin established a career high with 34 goals. Of that total, 19 goals â 55.88% â were scored at even strength. That ranked Larkin 73rd overall in the NHL.
âWell, five-on-five [scoring] is an issue,â Yzerman said. âScoring is an issue for our team, not just Dylan. Itâs an issue for our team, I think, collectively.
âBut just going back to Dylan specifically, we ask a lot, but he provides a lot of things other than just scoring.â
As captain of the Red Wings, Yzermanâs ability to lead was also questioned as Detroit endured multiple playoff failures in the early 1990s.
âI went through the same thing,â Yzerman said. âWhen your team isnât meeting expectations or reaching certain goals, itâs right to question the leadership.â
Yzerman is correct that the Red Wings both ask and expect plenty from the captain. Then again, what NHL team doesnât?
Still, it would be remiss not to look at Larkinâs overall contribution to the team when assessing his game.
âWell, I think, and Iâve said this to Dylan specifically, I think my expectation is for him to be a really good two-way player,â Yzerman said. âHe can play in all situations as a centerman. Be effective in the face-off circle, which, for the most part, heâs pretty darn good in there.â
Larkin won 52.9% of his draws this season. That rated second on the team and 34th overall in the league.
âI know heâs a good two-way player,â Yzerman said. âHe can generate offense. Heâs very good on the bumper on the power play.â
Echoing Yzermanâs sentiments, Detroit coach Todd McLellan acknowledges that he heaps responsibility on Larkinâs shoulders.
âHe has to be able to play a two-way game because he has to provide us some offense, and he also has to be responsible enough to shut down some of the top players,â McLellan said. âHe relishes that role and wants that role.â
The captain does indeed embrace the opportunity to lead the Red Wings in every way possible. And he also wonât dispute the notion that he needs to bring more to the ice to get this team into the playoffs.
âNot good enough, I would say again,â was Larkinâs assessment of his season, âbut a lot of positives.
âI do think itâs a hard job in our league to be out there to score and to shut down other teams and top players. And I took that role a lot this year, and to be honest with you, I love that role. It brings out the competitiveness in me.
âWhen (Edmontonâs Connor) McDavid comes in here, I want to be out there against him, and I want to keep him off the scoreboard, and itâs hard to do.â
So is makng the playoffs, as Larkin and the Red Wings continue to find out.
