Displaying determination and perseverance to get to the NHL, Detroit Red Wings forward Dominik Shine is earning recognition for not giving up on his dream.
The Detroit Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association has made Shine this yearâs Red Wings nominee for the Masterton Trophy. The Masterton is awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
Shine, 27, certainly checks off all of those boxes.
Last season, after nine seasons and more than 450 games with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, Shine would earn his first recall to the Red Wings.
He played nine games with the Red Wings last season. After scoring 25 goals with the Griffins this season, Shine was again summoned to the big club. He scored his first NHL goal and now has three goals in 16 games.
After such a long and arduous journey to the show, Shine is savoring every moment of his NHL opportunity.
âAt the end of the day, I just try to take it game by game, and I think thatâs kind of the approach I take anyway,â Shine said. âYouâve got to focus on your next game and how you can impact the game. So thatâs what Iâve been trying to do.â
Shine was born in Pinckney, Michigan. He was a college hockey player at Northern Michigan. He grew up a Red Wings fan, so wearing the Winged Wheel is a dream come true for him.
Playing mostly a bottom-six forward role for the Red Wings, Shineâs commitment is to supplying whatever the team is asking from him.
âItâs a role that I was in when I was coming into pro in the American League,â Shine said. âSo I kind of played a similar fourth-line role for a couple of years there in Grand Rapids.
âYou know, itâs tough. You play, you know, eight, nine minutes. Youâve got to make the most of your opportunities and just try to, like I said it before, youâve got to impact the game in a positive way because you can impact it in a negative way.
âPlaying less minutes, that doesnât look good usually. So I just try to be positive and good.â
