In the AHL playoffs with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit Red Wings 2024 first-round pick Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is feeling comfortable. And when Brandsegg-Nygard enters into his comfort zone, the night tends to get uncomfortable for his opponents.
Discussing where his game is at today as compared to when he started the 2025-26 season with the Red Wings, that was the word Brandsegg-Nygard was choosing as the appropriate adjective.
“More comfortable,” Brandsegg-Nygard said. “I mean, I feel like it helps with everything in the game. So, yeah, just more comfortable.”
That comfort came on Friday from a 5-2 victory that eliminated the Manitoba Moose from the AHL Calder Cup playoffs. Brandsegg-Nygard scored a goal and scored a technical knockout with his persistent physical presence.
If there was a scrum on the ice and someone on the Moose needed an attitude adjustment, Brandsegg-Nygard was there to apply some bone-jarring realignment.
“Just kind of happens,” Brandsegg-Nygard said of embracing the physical side of the game. “I don’t think about going in the scrums or whatever you call it, but it just happens in the moment.
“You’re a little frustrated, and you’re starting to get to know the other guys in the other locker room, so you have a little rivalry against them. You start to get a little beef there. But that’s just fine.”
Fine and dandy as far as Brandsegg-Nygard said. If you want to play rough, he’s happy to play along.
“Yeah, I mean, the intensity goes a little up,” Brandsegg-Nygard said of playoff hockey. “That part of the game is so much more fun.
“I like it a little physical and stuff like that. As I said, with the little rivalries we have with guys, so that’s a lot of fun.”
The rough-and-tumble world of postseason hockey isn’t a place for shrinking violets. But it’s the perfect place for Brandsegg-Nygard to find himself. He fits into that world like a glove.
“Yeah, he plays a North American pro style already in terms of his physicality,” Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson said.
It’s just one element of the package that has the Red Wings seeing a bright future ahead for the winger they chose 15th overall in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.
“He’s a really good forechecker,’ Watson said. “Obviously, we know he’s got a good shot. He’s still trying to find his way to get open to find those shots. But his overall awareness, his defensive play. I put him out there for the last couple of shifts.
“I trust him, and he’s going to do the right things. He’s strong on pucks, he protects pucks, he’s hard to knock off pucks. So, just all those intangibles he has make him a special player.
“There’s still room to grow, and I think that’s the exciting thing for him.”
