The level of progression among Detroit Red Wings prospects with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins offers significant degrees of advancement.
Some, like forward Carter Mazur and defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka, have enjoyed lengthy stints in the show with the Red Wings. There are players like defenseman William Wallinder, who are on the brink of taking that next step to the NHL.
Then there are those, such as goalie Trey Augustine, who is taking his first steps into the pro ranks.
Freshly signed from the Michigan State Spartans, for him, hockey is no longer just an adventure. It is a job. It’s his profession.
“I finished my school [at Michigan State] for the semester last week, so really, feeling it now,” Augustine said. “Like, just being able to find things to do away from the rink, take care of my body, and just get ready to go for tomorrow.
“It is a job, and I need to be ready to go every single day.
“I was just kind of getting my feet wet here. It’s been pretty different than the college schedule, so just getting used to it. It can only help me next year.”

Currently the No. 3 goalie on the Grand Rapids roster, as the Griffins battle in the Calder Cup playoffs, watching, listening, and learning are among the priorities on Augustine’s agenda.
“It’s been great,” Augustine said. “The guys have made it super easy for me. Just being able to kind of fit right in.
“The team has been awesome.”
Even though he’s the new kid between the pipes, many hockey prospect publications cite Augustine, a 2023 second-round draft pick, as Detroit’s top-rated goalie for the future. He’s persistently ranked ahead of the goalies above him in the Grand Rapids pecking order. That would be 2021 first-round pick Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava, who has been the starting netminder for the Griffins so far in the playoffs.
They may be competitors for a future role in Detroit, but they are also teammates. And teammates push each other to try and make everyone better.
“So far, they’ve been awesome,” Augustine said. “Obviously, two great goalies. I think the numbers kind of speak for themselves, obviously.
“And it’s just been super cool being out there for goalie skates with them to see how they play, different situations, and stuff. And like I said, they’ve just been super good around the locker room, making me feel welcome.”
