Just back in the Detroit Red Wings lineup, center Michael Rasmussen is heading back up on the shelf. And this time, it looks like it will be permanent.
Rasmussen left Tuesdayās 4-3 shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets after blocking a shot by Columbus defenseman Zach Werenski in the leg during a Blue Jackets power play late in the second period.
He did not return for the third period.
It was only the third game back for Rasmussen. Heād missed nine games with a lower-body injury after also taking a shot to the leg.
āYeah, I think heās probably going to miss a few more games,ā Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said.
With only four games remaining in the NHL regular-season schedule for the Red Wings, the likelihood of seeing Rasmussen in game action again would be remote at best.
āAgain, he blocked the shot basically in the exact same spot, so I donāt know if heās starting over or not,ā McLellan said, āBut he couldnāt return, and I doubt heāll practice tomorrow.ā
Itās been an all-around rough campaign for Rasmussen. This will be his third stint on the injury list. He also missed three games in November.
āYou always want to be out there supporting and helping how you can,ā Rasmussen said. āItās hard watching.ā
When heās been healthy and on the ice, the results produced by Rasmussen have been, to put it mildly, sub-par.
Rasmussen has gone pointless through his past 25 games. Heās scored one goal over his past 30 games.
For the season, Rasmussen shows 6-8-14 totals and a minus-10 rating over 64 games. Thatās far and away his lowest productivity since Rasmussen became a full-time NHLer in 2021-22.
Rasmussen is seventh on the team with 64 hits. He leads Detroit forwards with 63 blocked shots. In just 7:57 of ice time on Thursday, Rasmussen was first among the Red Wings forwards with four blocked shots.
