The Cincinnati Reds got off to a great start this season, but they've struggled a bit lately. One of the top storylines recently has been the future of Elly De La Cruz in Cincinnati. There were extension talks over the offseason, but nothing materialized.
Things changed a bit on Monday night, as De La Cruz shared an Instagram story that went viral, as he was dining out with his agent, Scott Boras, and there was a cool Reds-themed food item served to De La Cruz and Boras that only further sparked rumors.
Naturally, fans speculated what this dinner out meant, with one natural conclusion being that Boras and De La Cruz were closing in on an extension with the Reds. However, Jim Bowden of The Athletic shared a response from Reds president Nick Krall that isn't what fans will want to hear.

"Agent Scott Boras had dinner with his client Elly De La Cruz last night at Jeff Ruby's restaurant in Cincinnati, which made me reach out to Reds Prez Nick Krall to see if they re-engaged in ext talks...he replied 'Not at this time' fwiw," Bowden shared.
This isn't unexpected, as the Reds and De La Cruz were seemingly far apart in contract talks over the offseason, and it would be a surprise if things changed so quickly in the middle of the season.
But that didn't take away from fans hoping that this dinner out between De La Cruz and Boras might indicate a deal is in the works.
However, the Reds president shut down those rumors after this Instagram post went viral with plenty of speculation surrounding it.
At the end of the day, the Reds still need to work out a long-term deal with De La Cruz, that is, if Boras and the superstar Reds shortstop will seriously entertain extension offers.
If he hits the open market, with how good he's playing, he's sure to land a massive contract in free agency. That will be a problem for the Reds, as De La Cruz might get too large an offer for the Reds to match.
That's why an extension ASAP is important for the Reds. And with this Instagram post from De La Cruz going viral, it was only natural that some fans got excited about a potential deal. But, as the Reds president notes, there have been no changes in their talks.
