The double Olympic champion enters as the favorite after a mixed run of results following a strong start to the season.
Evenepoel opened 2026 with three victories at the Challenge Mallorca and followed that with overall success at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana.
However, his form dipped afterward, fading to 10th overall at the UAE Tour and finishing fifth at the Volta a Catalunya.
He showed signs of a return to form with third place at the Tour of Flanders, behind Tadej Pogacar and Mathieu van der Poel.
The 257-kilometer Amstel Gold Race, featuring 33 short, steep climbs, is expected to suit his attacking style.
Fans will have to wait for a full showdown between Evenepoel, Pogacar and rising French star Paul Seixas, as neither Pogacar nor Seixas will race at Amstel.
Seixas is expected to compete at La Flèche Wallonne midweek, while Pogacar will focus on Liège-Bastogne-Liège the following Sunday.
Pogacar has followed a streamlined program this season, winning Strade Bianche, Milano-Sanremo and the Tour of Flanders before finishing second at Paris-Roubaix.
Tom Pidcock, the 2024 Amstel winner, is expected to be among Evenepoel’s main challengers if he has recovered from his recent crash.
Defending champion Mattias Skjelmose will also line up, alongside Matteo Jorgenson, who impressed earlier this season with a runner-up finish at Tirreno-Adriatico.
French riders including Dorian Godon, Kevin Vauquelin, Axel Laurance and Romain Grégoire add further depth to the field, while Ben Healy could also thrive on the punchy climbs.
Attention will then shift to La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, where Seixas and Pogacar are set to renew their rivalry.
Their last meeting at Strade Bianche saw Seixas hold Pogacar’s wheel longer than anyone else before finishing second, signaling a potential future battle at the very top of the sport.
Remco Evenepoel aims to reignite his season and perform well at the Amstel Gold Race 2026.
He is considered a favorite due to his status as a double Olympic champion and his strong performance at the season's start.
The Amstel Gold Race 2026 takes place on Sunday as part of the Ardennes Classics.
