One of the main storylines during Boston Red Sox spring training was how the infield alignment would look.
When Marcelo Mayer earned a spot on the Opening Day roster, manager Alex Cora also said that the 23-year-old would be the team's primary second baseman, while offseason acquisition Caleb Durbin would man third base.
According to Red Sox insider Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, that was the source of a spring training disagreement between the recently fired Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
Interim manager Chad Tracy told McCaffrey that he will stick with Mayer at second and Durbin at the hot corner for now.
"A league source said that Breslow and Cora disagreed in spring training about where to play Caleb Durbin and Marcelo Mayer. Breslow wanted Mayer at third with Durbin at second, but Tracy said there’s no plan to make that switch at this point," McCaffrey wrote. "'I like where they’re at,' said Tracy, who complimented what’s been a solid defense the past several weeks. 'Especially right now, both of them are playing really well and Durbin has been exceptional at third base, his defense. So I like where it’s at and switching things like that in the middle of a season, especially at this level, is hard to do."
The 26-year-old Durbin has struggled at the plate this spring but is tied for the MLB lead with six defensive runs saved during his 33 games at third base.
Mayer has made just two errors in his 30 contests at second, while posting one home run, eight RBIs and a .256/.320/.356 slash line across 101 plate appearances.
