Report: Carnell Tate is 'in play' for the New York Giants at No. 5

As the 2026 NFL draft approaches, the New York Giants remain active in their evaluation of top wide receiver prospects, with recent reports indicating that Ohio State's Carnell Tate is firmly in consideration for their No. 5 overall selection.

NFL insider Albert Breer reports that the Giants have conducted thorough due diligence on multiple top wideouts, including significant interest in both Tate and Arizona State's Jordyn Tyson.

The Giants, I’ve heard, are in play to take one of them at No. 5. And, yes, GM Joe Schoen led a New York contingent to Tyson’s pro day last week. The Giants also had Tyson to New Jersey for a 30 visit, and John Harbaugh was at the first ASU pro day (Tyson didn’t work out at that one). But Schoen and Harbaugh were at Tate’s pro day, met with him there, and had him to Jersey for a 30 visit, too.

While recent buzz has centered on Tyson—with multiple reports suggesting the Giants may be targeting the explosive Arizona State product—Tate was viewed as an early favorite in many mock drafts following the college season. Scouts often give Tate the edge in top-five discussions due to his polished route-running, lower risk profile, and consistency compared to Tyson’s higher-upside but potentially riskier projection.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen has prioritized wide receiver help to support the offense this offseason, and the team's extensive pre-draft process on both players underscores the seriousness of their interest at the top of the board.
