Report: Giants, Dexter Lawrence have reached 'impasse' in contract talks
The New York Giants and star nose tackle Dexter Lawrence have reached an impasse in contract extension discussions, reports Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.
The Post confirmed that negotiations have stalled and an impasse has been reached as of late Tuesday night.
The development comes at a critical time, just days before the 2026 NFL Draft and hours after general manager Joe Schoen described ongoing talks as productive during his pre-draft press conference.

Schoen had stated that conversations with Lawrence's representatives, involving head coach John Harbaugh and senior vice president of football operations Dawn Aponte, had been "really good" and aimed at finding a resolution. He expressed the team's desire for Lawrence to remain in New York while noting the player remains under contract for two more years.
"We've had good conversations with his representatives throughout the last five or six days," Schoen told reporters. "We've all been in communication. We're all trying to find some resolution. We'd all like for Dexter to be here. And at some point, we'll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be. We'll see. But conversations have been really good. They've been productive. We'll see what happens here down the road."
Lawrence requested a trade earlier this month while seeking additional guaranteed money on his current deal, a four-year, $90 million extension signed in 2023 that has no remaining guarantees. Once the third-highest-paid interior defensive lineman, he now ranks around 12th and is coming off a less productive 2025 season.
The impasse could intensify trade discussions, with the Giants open to inquiries but unlikely to part with the defensive centerpiece without significant compensation, potentially including first-round draft picks.
Lawrence has skipped voluntary offseason workouts, though mandatory sessions carry fines for absences.
Several former players, including ex-Giant Saquon Barkley—whose own contract saga unfolded publicly on Hard Knocks—have implied that negotiations under Schoen can feel personal, adding another layer of tension to the situation.

An impasse means that both parties are unable to reach an agreement on the contract terms, resulting in stalled negotiations.
The impasse raises uncertainty about Lawrence's future with the team, especially with the NFL Draft approaching and potential impacts on roster decisions.
Joe Schoen described the ongoing contract talks as productive just hours before the reports of the impasse emerged.
The impasse in contract negotiations was reported late Tuesday night, just days before the 2026 NFL Draft.
