The Iowa Hawkeyes will vacate nine wins due to NCAA violations related to illegal contact with Cade McNamara before his transfer. The team will also face a $25,000 fine and additional recruiting restrictions.
The Iowa Hawkeyes find themselves in the spotlight of the college football world today for some of the wrong reasons. It has been reported by Chad Leistikow of the Des Moines Register that the Iowa Hawkeyes will be vacating wins as the NCAA hands down punishment for violations made during the Cade McNamara acquisition in 2022.
It was believed that the Hawkeyes made illegal contact with Cade McNamara via text messages and phone calls prior to him entering the transfer portal. The release states that Jon Budmayr, an Iowa assistant coach, and Kirk Ferentz told the student-athlete involved, assumed to be McNamara, that he would have a home due to Iowa's interest in him.
The Hawkeyes will be forced to vacate the wins in which McNamara appeared in for Iowa. During his tenure in Iowa City, McNamara appeared in 13 games, which saw the Hawkeyes go 9-4. Iowa will be vacating those nine victories. Iowa will also be subject to a $25,00 fine and other recruiting restrictions for the tampering.
"When respected individuals identify their mistakes and take responsibility for them, it sets the standard for appropriate behavior within their programs, universities, and, more importantly, across the broader industry. The panel appreciates the actions taken by Iowa and Ferentz to publicly address his and his staff member's conduct," the NCAA panel said in a comment regarding its decision.
If Kirk Ferentz subtracts these nine wins from his career total in the Big Ten, which is currently at 213, he would return to 204 wins as a Big Ten coach, once again needing one more to tie Woody Hayes and two more to reclaim the title of the Big Ten's winningest coach for the second time.
