The New York Giants revamped their coaching staff after hiring head coach John Harbaugh, but kept general manager Joe Schoen. It was a surprising move, as several people around the NFL believed Harbaugh wanted to bring his own general manager. However, Schoen’s time in New York could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.
There are people in the NFL who think Schoen could be fired as the Giants general manager “this week,” as reported by NY Daily News Sports’ Pat Leonard. New York is coming off a successful 2026 NFL Draft, and it is clear that Harbaugh’s fingerprints are all over the selections.
Schoen only has one year left on his contract, but he may not reach the endpoint. Harbaugh reports directly to New York ownership instead of Schoen, creating a different power structure than previously installed. It has limited Schoen’s power in the organization, which is evident based on the 2026 NFL Draft.
If the Giants moved on from Schoen, it would allow Harbaugh to eventually bring in his own general manager. If not, Schoen would essentially have a one year “trial” to see if he is a long-term fit next to Harbaugh in New York. However, this could all end if the Giants gave their general manager a new contract extension.
As of now, it seems like everything is on the table for the Giants after the 2026 NFL Draft. Schoen could stick around and work with Harbaugh or New York could fire him. Despite Harbaugh having significant say, Schoen still had input on a successful 2026 draft class.
It remains to be seen what happens moving forward, but it could spell the end of Schoen’s tenure as the Giants GM.
Joe Schoen's position is uncertain due to a shift in power dynamics with head coach John Harbaugh, who reports directly to ownership.
Reports suggest that Joe Schoen could be fired as soon as this week.
The 2026 NFL Draft showcased head coach John Harbaugh's influence, which may have limited Schoen's authority and contributed to speculation about his job security.
