Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony is dealing with another injury concern.
The 21-year-old left the Red Sox's 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers in the second inning on Monday after suffering a hand/wrist injury and is flying back to Boston on Tuesday to see a specialist.
Anthony, who recently missed four straight games with a back injury, will "likely" undergo an MRI as well.
MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo reported Monday night that the "initial read" on Anthony's injury was "generally positive."
"Still, thereâs enough concern that Anthony will return home Tuesday for further testing," Cotillo wrote. "Interim manager Chad Tracy said that Anthony, who left a 5-4 Red Sox victory with 'right wrist discomfort' after hurting himself on a first-inning foul ball, had X-rays that came back negative. As a precaution, Anthony will fly to Boston in the morning and likely have an MRI during an appointment with a team hand specialist."
The former second-round pick has been moved to the No. 3 spot in the lineup since Tracy took over for the recently-fired Alex Cora.
"Imaging tonight was negative, but we are gonna send him back to Boston to see our hand specialist just to let him look at it and make sure," Tracy, who didn't rule Anthony out from returning to Detroit over the next two days, said, according to Cotillo. "I think the whole point is to get him back with our specialist to see him and see how he is. If everythingâs good, weâll get him back here. But weâve got to get him back there first."
"I just took a swing and it didnât feel good," Anthony said. "As I came back in and went under to continue to swing, it just was painful."
The Florida native enters Tuesday with one home run, five RBIs and a .229/.354/.321 slash line across 130 plate appearances covering 30 games this season.
