And yet, INEOS have yet to confirm their current interim head coach beyond June. Carrick is considered the favourite for the permanent role, especially in the absence of available top-notch candidates, but he still has a few challengers for the post.

The transfer market insider notes that Carrick remains in a good spot, especially with the team on the cusp of guaranteeing UCL football. Nevertheless, the club is still expected to hold internal talks before making the final decision.
At this stage, it’s difficult to understand why Man Utd would even consider ditching Carrick, after all the remarkable work he has conducted since his arrival, for a relatively unsung profile like Iraola.
The Spaniard may have amassed more Premier League experience than the current MUFC head coach, at least in terms of games in charge. However, the Englishman’s 15 years at Carrington, between his playing days and various coaching roles, have certainly helped prepare him for this massive gig.
As a young manager, Carrick still has a large room for improvement, as does Iraola, but the Man Utd legend has already proven himself to be a smooth operator capable of forming solid bonds with his players and the fanbase, and is keen to revive the academy’s historic role at the club.
All in all, United already have a formidable candidate at home, one who happens to be one of their own. While none of us can foresee the future, the present suggests that Carrick has done enough to warrant his chance.
