That didn't end up happening, though. He went pro instead, and the rest is pretty much history.
McIlroy is now a six-time major champion, including back-to-back wins at the Masters.
But college golf? It almost became reality.
McIlroy was once committed to East Tennessee State. He even signed a letter of intent to ETSU, and the school announced his signing on Nov. 29, 2004, noting that "the youthful McIlroy brings an extensive and successful resume to Johnson City."
He never got to Johnson City.
McIlroy had been drawn in by successful ETSU recruitment of Irish players, according to an ESPN article.
It's pretty wild to wonder what might've changed if McIlroy ended up at ETSU. Maybe he would've still become an all-time great, just with a fascinating other chapter that few realize was even a possibility.
There's always a chance it would've changed everything, though. Maybe McIlroy's career would've amounted to something else entirely.
The golf world will never know. In the actual reality, McIlroy became an all-timer with no college stop along the way.
