Rory McIlroy’s comments after shooting 73 at The Masters prove how different he is to Tiger Woods

Rory McIlroy held a six-shot lead after 36 holes of The Masters on Friday night.

However, McIlroy’s poor driving and loose iron play finally caught up with him on Saturday at Augusta National.

The 36-year-old is now tied for the lead heading into the final round of The Masters on Sunday.

McIlroy posted a third round 73 at Augusta National on Saturday and allowed many players back in the race to win The Masters as a result.

Augusta National was playing fairly easy as McIlroy struggled, and now he is tied for the lead heading into the final round on Sunday.

McIlroy was working hard on his game after day three of The Masters, grinding with his driver trying to find something.

That is never a good sign, is it?

However, McIlroy’s main problem may well be that he doesn’t have the hunger needed to win another green jacket.

McIlroy spoke to reporters on Saturday at Augusta National after signing for a 73.

He was asked how he feels about his round and the fact that he is now tied for the lead with just 18 holes left to play.

The 36-year-old was also asked if there is a big difference to how he is feeling now compared to last year when he entered the final round with the lead.

“I’d like to think that I’ll play a little bit freer and I’ll play, you know, like I’ve already got a green jacket, which I do,“ McIlroy said.

*“*Sometimes I maybe just have to remind myself of that, but I think as well that the stakes in terms of, like, the pairing will be just a little bit easier.

*“*You know, the atmosphere out there will be a little bit easier.

“Yeah, I’m not worried about that at all. I wish I was a few shots better off, but I’m comfortable. I played with Cam the first two days. Playing with him again tomorrow. I think it’s a comfortable group for both of us.“

In my opinion, those comments highlight just how different McIlroy is to Tiger Woods.

Do you think Woods would have been content with winning just one Masters?

Of course he wouldn’t.

While McIlroy obviously wants to win The Masters again, it’s very clear to see that he will be content if he never acquires another green jacket.

That, in my opinion, is why McIlroy has never reached the heights that Woods reached.

It’s fair to say that he possesses very similar talent to the 15-time major champion.

However, winning golf tournaments isn’t the be-all and end-all for him.

McIlroy’s comments on how his success at The Masters last year has taken the pressure off him this year perhaps offered us all an insight into why he has only won five majors.

I use the term ‘only’ relative to the Northern Irishman’s talent and potential.

He could have won 10 majors by now, if he had Tiger Woods’ drive and determination to win, in my opinion.
