Roxbury senior Abbie Rattay has set all girls lacrosse records at her school, including goals, assists, and points. She achieved this milestone during a season-opening win and a subsequent game against Montville.

Abbie Rattay has carved her name into Roxbury girls lacrosse history. The senior midfielder now has all the Gaels' records: goals, assists, points, draw controls, ground balls and caused turnovers.
Points and assists were the last marks to fall. Rattay surpassed Emma Karnitsky (2015-18) atop the points list with six goals and six assists in Roxbury's season-opening 13-6 win against Holy Angels on March 26.
That left Rattay needing four assists for the final school record. That took quite a bit longer. But she took care of that midway through the first quarter of the Gaels' 14-7 home loss to Montville on April 18. Teammates held up posters on the sideline as Rattay headed back to midfield to take the next draw control.
"Funny enough, I really don't know the record numbers or what I'm breaking," said Rattay, who has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Michigan. "It's crazy. How did I do this? All the records? Something about that's got a shock factor to it."
Roxbury, NJ -- April 23, 2024 -- Abbie Rattay of Roxbury as Park Regional played Roxbury in girls lacrosse.
Rattay has 250 goals, 65 assists, 409 draw controls, 121 caused turnovers and 166 ground balls.
Karnitsky graduated with 206 goals and 65 assists, then went on to play at The College of New Jersey. She'd erased Emma Conwell from the Gaels' record book, just like Rattay has now done to her.
This is the 25th season of Roxbury girls lacrosse.
"She's a once-in-a-lifetime kid coming through the program," longtime coach Kevin Bewalder said. ""We've had kids who can shoot well or defend hard, but not all the aspects. She's top notch. She plays the game the right way with her teammates. She makes them better as a result of her play. I's been a treat to watch her."

Abbie followed her eldest brother, Ryan, onto the lacrosse field. At first, she tagged along to watch Ryan, as well as middle brother Matt's football and baseball games.
Abbie was playing softball and basketball at the time. But lifelong friend Brooke Franetovich had tried lacrosse, and, her father Tom Rattay recalled, "Next thing I know, Abbie's got a stick in her hand and they're playing. She never looked back."
Abbie and Brooke joined STEPS Lacrosse together in sixth grade, and have been teammates since then — including at Roxbury, where Franetovich is a senior attack.
Bewalder heard about Rattay when he was coaching his twin daughters, Paige and Casey, on Roxbury's third and fourth grade team. Rattay was on the seventh-eighth team, and Bewalder was looking forward to when she'd play at the high school.
However, Rattay broke her foot early in her freshman season and played just six games. She had 94 goals as a sophomore and 97 as a junior, improving from 138 draw controls to 191.
"I put max effort into every little thing I'm doing: passing the ball, assisting my teammates, if we need a goal, if we need a ground ball," Rattay said. "I'm hustling and being gritty on every play. That's something I pride myself on: being tenacious and hustling."
