Thirty years after a University of Miami star defensive lineman saw his stock fall in the NFL Draft, another Hurricanes DL could be facing the same situation.
UM defensive end Rueben Bain Jr. was cited in March 2024 for careless driving after causing a crash that led to the incapacitation of a 22-year-old woman. She later died after spending three months in a coma. The charge was dismissed by a court in May 2024, according to the case docket obtained by The Read Optional, a newsletter, and published on April 12.
In 1995, then UM defensive lineman Warren Sapp, projected to be drafted in the top five, fell to the 12th overall pick and to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after reports of allegedly failing drug tests for marijuana and cocaine surfaced on the eve of the draft. The NFL later denied those allegations and Sapp went on to a Pro Football Hall of Fame career.
According to the accident report obtained by The Read Optional, Bain, projected to be drafted in the top 15, was driving north on I-95 in Miami at about 4 a.m. on March 17, 2024, when his 2021 Land Rover rear-ended another car. He then drove into concrete barriers on both sides of the highway before coming to a stop on the shoulder of the highway.
Destiny Betts, 22, one of four passengers in the car, suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial in Miami. She spent almost three months in a coma before dying on June 13, 2024. A second passenger was hospitalized with injuries.

According to the report, there was no suspected alcohol or drug use. No field sobriety tests were given.
In a statement to The Read Optional, Bettsâ family called the crash a âtragic accidentâ and said they âwish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career.â
Bain, considered a top 10 pick in the upcoming draft, posted 121 tackles, 33.5 tackles for loss and 20.5 sacks during his Miami career, helping lead the Hurricanes to the national championship game where they lost to Indiana.
