AUGUSTA, Ga. ― Competing in his 10th Masters Tournament, Russell Henley had never bettered 67.
Until Saturday. With three birdies over his final four holes, the Georgia native carded a 66 to springboard into contention.
“Super calm conditions, and I just felt like I hit my irons great,” Henley said. “Extremely pleased.”
In 34 competitive rounds at the Masters, Henley had recorded a pair of 67’s (Sunday 2018 and Friday 2023) but never lower. On moving day, Henley went bogey-free with birdies on Nos. 3, 8, 11, 15, 16 and 18).
The UGA graduate pinpointed his second shot on No. 18, where he played a cut 7-iron that led to his sixth birdie.
“I don't hit that green that often,” Henley admitted of the 18th. “It's pretty tough to hit that one, so really happy.”
When asked about the possibility of a Sunday charge, Henley said, “The course is gettable. If I keep playing the way I'm playing, I hope that I can keep moving up.”
