Rutgers men’s basketball has made its first addition to its center room and second addition to its front court this offseason, as former Virginia Tech Center Christian Gurdak has committed to the team out of the transfer portal, according to his social media pages.

Gurdak has one season of experience, playing his freshman year with the Hokies before entering the portal. He comes to Rutgers with three years of eligibility remaining.

Gurdak played in 31 games and started 10, while averaging 17.2 minutes per game during his freshman season at Virginia Tech. During that time, he averaged 5.6 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, and 0.3 assists per game. He also proved himself to be a solid shooter, hitting 63.2 percent of his shots from the floor and 71.4 percent of his shots from the rim.

One of his best performances of the season came against Rival No.21 Virginia on New Year’s Eve, when he had a 17-point, 19-rebound performance in the triple overtime win for the Hokies.

In addition, he had an offensive rebound rate of 14.8 percent last season, which was one of the best in the ACC against those who played similar minutes.

Gurdak originally hails from Charles Town, West Virginia; however, he spent his high school days at Gonzaga High School in Washington DC. During his high school recruitment, he was rated as a four-star by 247sports and a three-star by On3.

Gurdak has flashed in his smaller sample sizes at Virginia Tech, but will now have to prove that he can continue that upward trajectory while taking on a bigger role in the Big Ten.
