Former Rutgers wrestling national champion Anthony Ashnault will be back on the mat Saturday for the first time in two years.
Ashnault, who retired from competition following his loss in the Last Chance Qualifier prior to the Olympic Trials in 2024, will face world bronze medalist Real Woods on the Real American Freestyle 08 card at Templeâs Liacouras Center in Philadelphia Saturday night.
Ashnault joined the Princeton University wrestling staff as an assistant immediately after his retirement from wrestling.
âIâve just been all in on coaching, and I still am,â said Ashnault, who along with Nick Suriano are the only NCAA wrestling champions in Rutgers history and the only four-time undefeated state champions in New Jersey history. âItâs fun to mix it up and change your focus and get your body in good shape to compete. Most importantly, I feel good enough to compete.
âI would sit on my couch and watch the (RAF) events with my fiancee. Itâs the most exciting platform wrestling has had in my lifetime, and I think the sport needs it. Itâs just a really cool event, and they presented me the opportunity. Itâs in Philadelphia, theyâre taking care of the athletes financially and it got to the point where Iâm getting older and I donât want to not take advantage of an opportunity when I can still do it.â
Ashnault and Woods will compete in an 145-pound middleweight match which presented its own challenges. When Ashnault won his national title at Rutgers in 2019, he was 149 pounds.
He competed in freestyle at 65 kg (143 pounds) and 70 kg (154 pounds).
Ashnault received the offer to compete right before NCAAs in late March. He decided right after to accept and started training with NJRTC athletes in addition to his offseason coaching duties.
âItâs not tournament style, I just have to get my body prepared for one match,â said Ashnault. âIâve been working with Quincy Monday, Yahya Thomas and Reece Humphrey and I connected with (Columbia assistant coach) Sebastian Rivera.â
Anthony Ashnault is returning to wrestling to compete in one final match, feeling good enough to compete after focusing on coaching since his retirement.
Ashnault will face world bronze medalist Real Woods at the Real American Freestyle 08 event in Philadelphia.
Ashnault's return match is scheduled for Saturday night at Templeâs Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.
Anthony Ashnault is a former NCAA wrestling champion and one of only two NCAA champions in Rutgers history, as well as a four-time undefeated state champion in New Jersey.

Ashnault was admittedly surprised when RAF offered up the match with Woods, who captured the world bronze medal in Croatia a year ago.
âMy first impression was no warmup, I guess no layup, huh? There wasnât a retired wrestler who had been competing in MMA who wanted it?â said Ashnault. âI made a joke about it, but then it was OK, game on. I have an opportunity to compete against the best in the country, and that excites me. Itâs what I preach to my athletes. Your preparation is for opportunities like this.â
Ashnault said his Princeton athletes are excited for him. His family had more reservations.
âThe wrestlers were all jacked up, they like I have the confidence to do this,â said Ashnault. âBut my family felt like I was crazy. My mom was like, âYouâre doing what? Come on.ââ
Ashnault feels like this could be his retirement match. He signed a three-match contract but he feels that was more for a non-compete clause than a guarantee he will wrestle two more times.
âI realize Iâm a coach and thatâs where my focus is,â said Ashnault. âI donât want to go back to competing full-time and wrestling in tournaments. If there was a good time to sneak it in, itâs now.
âI love what I do coaching-wise, and Iâm progressing in my coaching career. I do miss the competition and when I sit in that chair I wish I was out there, so this fills that competitive void. To have this match is very rewarding. I look forward to showing off the best version of my wrestling. I think I can shock some people. Iâm going to let it fly and try to put some points on the board.â
Ashnault has been rumored to fill the Scarlet Knightsâ vacant assistant coaching opening that became available when Steve Mytych stepped down. Ashnault - who was previously a Rutgers assistant while still competing on the senior level - said he couldnât speak on whether he was a candidate.
Another former Rutgers wrestler, Mike VanBrill, will also compete on the card against Jordan Oliver in a middleweight match.
There will be 12 matches overall. Olympic gold medalists Kyle Snyder and Helen Maroulis are among the competitors on the card, which begins at 8 p.m. and will be shown on Fox Nation.
