After giving the media a chance to speak to head coach Greg Schiano, offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, and defensive coordinator Travis Johansen, the program has started the press conferences where members of the media can ask questions to position coaches. This time, it was running backs coach Damiere Shaw’s turn to hop on the podium and answer questions about his position group.
Much like in wide receiver coach Dave Brock’s press conference, the first question had to do with a major offensive piece returning and how important it was to get Antwan Raymond back for another year. He talked about how Raymond wasn’t just one of the best backs in the country from a statistical standpoint, but also from a work ethic standpoint, and how this reflects on not just the culture of the program but the bond in the running back room as well.
Shaw also sang the praises of Ja’Shon Benjamin and his current trajectory.
Shaw also got the opportunity to speak on his new role as associate offensive coordinator.
“Yeah, so first and foremost, I still have to make sure the running backs are ready to go every Saturday. And then whatever Coach Ciarrocca needs me to do to help the offense produce and be productive on Saturday. So whatever task is thrown my way, I’m ready to take it in full stride. But it was cool. I was honored.
Damiere Shaw highlighted Antwan Raymond's significance not only as a top-performing back but also for his strong work ethic, which positively impacts the team's culture.

The press conference with Damiere Shaw occurred during the spring practice sessions, following media interactions with head coach Greg Schiano and other coordinators.

And to me, it goes back to the players. We’ve had a lot of success in the running back room, but that’s a result of the players. Whether it’s Antwan, whether it’s Kyle, whether it’s Ja’shon, whether it’s the guys on the scout team. So it all goes back to the players. So I’m honored to have the guys in my room to help me look like a better coach.”
Shaw also got the opportunity to speak on why they decided to bring in transfer RB Clay Thevenin from Louisiana Tech.
“We watched probably over 60 running backs and evaluated a bunch. But when we watched his film, I saw some elite traits. Change of direction, suddenness, the ability to generate those yards after contact that I just alluded to. And then when we got on the phone and had a chance to speak with him and then visit him, that football character and that personal character matched the film. So to me, to us as the offensive staff and with Coach Schiano, it was a no-brainer to add a guy like that.”
The press conference wrapped up with Shaw explaining how Kyle Monangai’s mentality and work ethic left behind a legacy that is being carried down by those who were in the running back room while he was here, mainly Benjamin and Raymond.
