Ryan Day emphasized Ohio State's high recruiting standards, stating that players are expected to be first or second-round draft picks. His comments sparked social media reactions and criticism from former players.
Ohio State has been one of the most consistently dominant programs this century, with each of its last three full-time coaches winning national championships.
It's been no different under Ryan Day, who is 82-12 and has led the Buckeyes to a top-five finish in the AP poll five times in seven seasons. A primary reason for that has been Day and his staff's recruiting prowess, and during an appearance on "Not Just Football with Cam Heyward," Day revealed the high standards he has when it comes to offering recruits.
"But I think it's just across the board at Ohio State, there's an expectation that when you come here, you're coming to be a first or second-rounder, regardless of your position," Day said. "And that's it. If we don't win games and championships, they're gonna find a new coach. Well, if you're not a first or second-rounder, this probably isn't the right place for you."
The comments drew some attention on social media, with fans pointing out that it appears Day is calling out the vast majority of his roster, which won't be selected in the first two rounds. They also drew criticism from New England Patriots defensive end Dre'Mont Jones, who played for the Buckeyes under Urban Meyer while Day was an assistant.
Day has certainly coached plenty of Day 3 picks (or future undrafted players) at Ohio State, but it's clear he and the Buckeyes are looking for the best of the best on the recruiting trail.
