Sabrina Ionescu injury update: New York Liberty guard to have MRI on ankle
UNCASVILLE, CT — New York Liberty point Sabrina Ionescu will have an MRI Monday after injuring her left ankle Sunday, May 3 in their WNBA preseason finale – a 79-67 victory over the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Ionescu drove in for a layup around the 7:40 mark of the third quarter and landed awkwardly, rolling the left ankle. Her feet appeared to get tangled with the Sun's Diamond Miller. Ionescu was seen with a boot on her left leg after the game.
"[Things are] positive right now," first-year Liberty coach Chris DeMarco said postgame. "We're just going to do the test tomorrow and that's the only update I have."
Ionescu hurt the same ankle her rookie year and ended up having season-ending surgery. She did not play in Unrivaled, the 3-on-3 professional league, this offseason due to an injury sustained during the 2025 WNBA season.

"Obviously, it wasn't good to see," Liberty center Jonquel Jones said. ".. .Our fingers are crossed and we'll just kind of handle it as we get more information."
Ionescu had six points on 2-of-8 shooting in under 16 minutes of play. She played in 38 games last season for New York, averaging 18.2 points, 5.7 assists and 4.9 rebounds.
The Liberty, who won their first WNBA championship in 2024, had injury issues all of last season and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Phoenix Mercury. Jones (ankle) and Breanna Stewart (knee) missed 13 regular-season games each while Ionescu (neck, toe) missed six. Former Liberty forward Nyara Sabally played in 17 games because of a knee injury.
New York will open the 2026 regular season by playing host to the Sun at the Barclays Center on Friday, May 15 (7:30 p.m. ET, ION).
