The New Orleans Saints are signing Ole Miss DT Zxavian Harris, per reports. The 6’8”, 330-pound defensive lineman will bring unquestioned size and strength.
Do not think of Harris as only a nose tackle (playing either head-up or shaded on the center); he has experience playing across the interior defensive line, from 3-tech to 5-tech.
Harris was expected to be a top-100 pick in last week’s draft, with many projecting him to be selected between Rounds 3 through 5. Unfortunately for him, he went undrafted. Harris falling out of the draft—and then having to wait several days after the initial wave of UDFAs were signed likely stems from his past.
The Saints have been very careful about bringing in players with solid character. One could argue that signing Harris is a step away from what has become the expectation for the organization. Harris was arrested in 2023 for DUI, reckless driving, felony fleeing, among other charges. Then in 2024, he was arrested again on domestic violence and obstruction charges.
Despite Harris’ past, his presence on the defense signals the potential for an immediate impact and provides insight into where head coach Kellen Moore may be looking to shape his defensive front. Moore served as the offensive coordinator for the Eagles, a team that featured a defensive line built on massive size and athleticism, including players like Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis. That defense was also influenced by legendary defensive mind Vic Fangio, and that system is now being implemented in New Orleans with defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, who comes from the Fangio coaching tree.
Immediately, the Saints have increased their size and depth with two rookies in Harris and Christen Miller. If Harris can stay focused and remain on the right path, this has the potential to be a major offseason addition.
