FC Schalke are promoted to Bundesliga as champions with two games to spare in 2. Bundesliga. Kenan Karaman spoke about his latest teammate, Edin Džeko, after the win over Fortuna Düsseldorf secured their spot in Germany’s top-flight after a two-year absence.
“Edin (Džeko) is a world-class player with an incredible career,” said Schalke’s captain about the Bosnia and Herzegovina striker in an interview with Bundesliga. “I was very happy the transfer went through. And I knew straight away that he would help us.”
Against Düsseldorf, Džeko returned to the team for the first time since sustaining a shoulder injury at the end of Bosnia’s surprise win over Italy, which sent his country to the World Cup. Prior to that, he scored six goals in only eight appearances after joining the storied club on a free transfer.
“Of course, his goals have been hugely important, but also his presence as a person and a character in the dressing room. Having a leader like that, with his experience, is very valuable for the team,” reflected Karaman about the 40-year-old striker.
“He knows that Schalke is a big club with incredible supporters, and that the club belongs in the top division. That’s clear. I think he made a very conscious decision to join Schalke,” added the captain.
Karaman also applauded the addition of Frank Baumann to the board and the calm he has brought to the club since his appointment. “He definitely changed our approach, especially compared to the last few years. Frank is an expert in his field, with many years of experience at another big club, Werder Bremen. His calmness and clarity are very good for the club.”
