Jon Scheyer hasnāt had a lot to say after Dukeās excruciating loss to UConn, but he spoke out a bit recently.
Scheyer spoke to Josh Graham about Dukeās Elite Eight game against the Huskies and said this:
āIām not shying away from the fact that thereās incredible heartbreak and disappointment when we lose the way we did. Weāve lost two unimaginable ways in the last two seasons.
āAt the same time, weāve been back-to-back-to-back Elite Eights for the first time in 30-something years. Weāve had really good success in the tournament. It just hasnāt ended with a win the way that we want.ā
Thatās basically correct, but people should remember this, too: last season, Duke went into the Houston game with Maliq Brown still fragile, Caleb Foster still less than 100% from his freshman foot injury, Cooper Flagg having been banged up in the ACC Tournament, and Khaman Maluach facing the threat of deportation.
This year, Duke played Houston with Pat Ngongba and Foster both out of the starting lineup and on scooters for much of March, and Cameron Boozer playing most of that game with multiple fractures to his orbital socket.
Thatās a much different frame than most people, including Scheyer at least publicly, have applied, but itās true.
