Scholes names Man United ‘issues’ Carrick must fix

Paul Scholes has said Michael Carrick still has ‘issues’ to fix at Manchester United despite his impressive reign as interim manager.

Carrick has won 10 of his 14 games since replacing Ruben Amorim on an interim basis, leading the Red Devils to Champions League qualification.

Since his appointment, Manchester United lead the Premier League form table. Carrick has also claimed wins over each of the other sides in the top four, and Chelsea.

His performances have made Carrick the clear frontrunner to become the next permanent manager, but Scholes has warned there are still big problems with the side.

The former Manchester United midfielder said the Red Devils must fix their openness in midfield and said next season will be a true test of Carrick’s credentials, if his reign extends beyond the summer.

“The only thing he has really done is play Kobbie Mainoo and play people in the right positions,” Scholes told The Overlap.

“What we’ve seen from the other managers, the team were all over the place. There was a system that they had NO idea how to play.

“They’ve got four good forwards that get you out of a lot of trouble at times. And I still see issues right through the middle of the pitch. Every time there’s a problem with United, it’s right through the middle of the pitch.

“The Szoboszlai goal… Every goal they concede seems to be like that. Now, I don’t think we’ll know about Michael until we get to November, December…”
