Scottie Scheffler is talking about scores.
This is PGA Championship week, after all, but this story is about a junior event heâd played in when he was 12. It was a qualifying event, he explained, and you could either take your result and enter that weekâs main tournament, or use it in the future. But Schefflerâs dad, Scott, didnât make it an either/or proposition. His son could play only in the qualifier. No tournament that week. The family had to be somewhere.
Deal. Scott dropped off Scottie. Scottie played. Scottie called him when it was over.
âHe goes, âI donât like this. This is not something I want to hear,ââ the younger Scheffler said Tuesday at Aronimink Golf Club, the PGAâs host. âI said, âWell, dad, I won the qualifier.â So if I win the qualifier, I get into the tournament, and I get to save the exemption. So Iâm like, I got to play in the tournament.
âHeâs like, âScottie, I told you, you canât play in the tournament. Iâm like, âBut dad, I won.ââ
Of course, heâd remember that story.
He was just listening to his mother.
Scheffler had been asked in his pre-PGA press conference for advice for young golfers and their parents, and he said his parents never pushed him. Theyâd drop him off with coach Randy Smith, and he was off.
âI think there were more important things for them than my golf game,â Scheffler said. âI think growing up, especially when you look at youth sports today, I think you see a lot of parents that are overzealous. Thatâs not from a place where they donât care. I think they want their kids to have success. I think they want them to do well. I think sometimes pushing them towards something is the best way to do it.
âMaybe it isnât in some cases, but I think I did my best when my parents would drop me off at the golf course and let me do my thing. One of the first things that Randy taught my dad is when Scottie gets to the golf course, he takes his own bag off the golf cart, he sets up his own area. He doesnât need you out there, this is his thing. I think they did a good job of guiding me along, helping me when I need help, but not pushing me to be anything other than a good student and a good person. It wasnât all about golf with them.â
Scottie Scheffler mentioned that his mother never asked him about his golf scores, highlighting her supportive but hands-off approach.
Scottie Scheffler participated in a junior qualifying event when he was 12 years old, which allowed him to enter a future tournament based on his performance.
Scottie Scheffler's father, Scott, decided that his son could only participate in the qualifying event and not the main tournament that week, emphasizing family commitments.
The PGA Championship week is significant for Scottie Scheffler as it marks a major tournament week, contrasting with his early experiences in junior golf.

And his mom, Diane, did one that was âinteresting,â he said. She had a rule.
âShe never asked me what I shot,â Scheffler said. âShe said, âIf you want me to know what you shot, youâll tell me.
ââI donât have to ask you what you shot.ââ

Good advice, and the benefits are clear. Later in the press conference, Scheffler talked about how heâs internally focused and how he enjoys improving, and you can see where that took root. Still, youâre curious.
Did Scheffler play in that junior tournament?
And howâd he do?
He remembered that, too.
âSo he ends up letting me play in the tournament,â Scheffler said, âand I remember calling him when the tournament ended, because the tournament was a couple of hours away, and he had to leave me there for a period of time. I was like 12 years old. Heâs probably not going to be happy me telling this story.
âI called him after the tournament, because the tournament ended, everythingâs cleaned up, and heâs not going to be back for another hour or two. So Iâm just out practicing after the tournament. I called him, âWell, dadâ â I told him what I shot, finished fifth. Now Iâm fully exempt. We donât have to worry about the qualifiers anymore. Heâs like, âOK, great. Iâll be there in a couple hours.ââ
