Scottie Scheffler says if he believes he can beat Rory McIlroy and win The Masters after shooting 65

Scottie Scheffler returned to form on day three at The Masters, firing an incredible round of 65.

Scheffler currently trails the leader, Rory McIlroy, by five shots.

The 29-year-old’s hopes of catching McIlroy will be very much dependent on how the Northern Irishman finishes off his round on Saturday.

Scheffler has won The Masters twice before, and he may well have a chance to win his third green jacket on Sunday.

The man from Dallas, Texas, was in imperious form on Saturday at Augusta National, making one eagle, five birdies and 12 pars.

Scheffler trailed McIlroy by 12 after day two at The Masters, and even he would have doubted his chances of even contending, let alone winning the golf tournament.

However, after firing a 65 and McIlroy treading water, a third green jacket will definitely still be in Scheffler’s sights heading into Sunday.

Scottie Scheffler says if he believes he can still win The Masters

Rory McIlroy will probably have to come back to Scheffler slightly, if the world number one is to have a chance of winning at Augusta National on Sunday.

However, his round of seven-under-par has at least given him a chance.

Scheffler responded when asked if he now feels like he can win the tournament after fixing up his swing on Saturday.

“I mean, I didn’t fix anything,“ Scheffler said.

*“*I felt like yesterday I played a lot better than my score, and then today, you know, early in the round, I felt like I got a lot out of it, and then on the back 9, I did a lot of really good things, and I didn’t really feel like I got the reward for it.

“So I feel like I left a few shots out there, but overall, it was a good day. You know, we’ll see what happens this afternoon, but, yeah, I don’t I don’t feel like I’m out of the tournament, so it’s good to kind of put myself back in position.“

If Scheffler shoots another 65 on Sunday, he may well be in with a really good chance of winning the fifth major championship of his career.

The American was asked why he has found it tough going on the par-fives this week.

“Yeah, well, I mean, yesterday, I had the two water balls. That’s gonna kill you,“ he said.

*“*And then today, on the fairway on 13, I get a mud ball. So there’s not much I can do there other than try and get it up there somewhere on the green.

*“*I had a 6 iron in my hand and so it’s a scoring club. And, you know, you get mud on your ball, there’s not really much you can do. Just a bad break.

*“*And then today and going into 15, I hit a really nice shot. Caught a little gust down wind.

*“*It landed pretty close to pin, but just took a big bounce and went over. But overall, yeah, I’m putting myself in position.

“It was just a matter of getting the job done.“

If Scottie Scheffler is to have any chance of winning The Masters on Sunday, he will need to be at least four-under on the par fives you would think.

Maybe he’s saving up all his par-five scoring for the final round!
