And with the PGA Championship set to start this week, it could only be a matter of time before the Dallas native wins his fifth major championship.

Scottie Scheffler’s PGA Championship hopes receive a triple boost

Scheffler is in a really strong position to win the fifth major of his career and his second Wanamaker trophy this week at Aronimink.

His game is in good shape and he has already been working hard at Aronimink while his main rivals battled it out at the Truist Championship last week.

He’s ranked first in strokes gained total this year and that just goes to show that he is still performing to an elite level.

Scheffler’s closest challengers in the game right now are world number two Rory McIlroy, red-hot American Cameron Young and the remarkably consistent Matt Fitzpatrick.

Young and Fitzpatrick have arguably been the best two players on the PGA Tour this season, while McIlroy won The Masters for the second consecutive time last month.

However, all of those players have cause for concern ahead of the PGA Championship.

Fitzpatrick put in one of his worst performances of the season at Quail Hollow last week, finishing in a tie for 52nd.

He drove the ball poorly and really struggled on the greens. That is hardly ideal preparation ahead of the second major of the year.

Meanwhile, Cameron Young ended his week at the Truist Championship in really poor fashion, shooting a final-round 74 to drop out of contention and finish in a tie for 10th.

It has been claimed that Cam Young looked exhausted during his final round at Quail Hollow, and the PGA Championship this week being his third tournament in three weeks is certainly not ideal.

Rory McIlroy’s woes leave the door open for Scottie Scheffler

Finally, McIlroy will unquestionably be very worried about his form at the Truist.

Sure, he ended the week on a positive note by shooting a round of 67 on Sunday, but his swing seemed to be completely out of sync, and he putted poorly.

McIlroy’s third round 75 at Quail Hollow was his ninth worst statistical performance in his entire professional career.

It would be silly to assume that he is not even slightly concerned by that. He also alluded to the fact that practicing on the range at Quail Hollow last week was problematic due to the prevailing left to right wind.

That caused him to develop a slight ‘over the top’ motion in his swing, with a slightly shut clubface which led to pulled iron shots throughout the week.

Finally, it’s worth noting that all three players mentioned above would have gone through real physical and mental stress last week in Charlotte, North Carolina, while Scheffler will be fresh as a daisy.

So, the world number one was the biggest winner last week without even playing a tournament.

Everything is falling into place for Scottie Scheffler ahead of the PGA Championship this week, and nobody should be surprised if he ended up running away with the Wanamaker trophy for the second consecutive year.
