The New Orleans Saints added running back Travis Etienne, likely making them less inclined to draft a running back early in 2026. However, Roman Hemby from the Indiana Hoosiers remains a potential later-round pick due to the team's need for depth at the position.
Running back Travis Etienne was a big addition by the New Orleans Saints early into free agency. He'll likely be the featured back in the offense, but will team with veteran Alvin Kamara to give the Saints a formidable 1-2 punch. Etienne's presence probably means that New Orleans won't select a running back early in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, don't overlook a back like Roman Hemby of the Indiana Hoosiers with a later choice.
New Orleans ranked 28th in rushing yards and 31st in yards per carry last season, scoring only 9 touchdowns on the ground. Some of that was Kamara being lost for the year after 11 games, but even he had a drastic decline in production. What Kamara's absence really exposed was a lack of quality and reliable depth at the position. With Kamara turning 31 and entering his 10th season with a high cap number, drafting Hemby or another back could be as much for the present as it would be the future.
The Maryland Terrapins kept Hemby, a three-star recruit at The John Carroll School, close to home. He'd appear in only four games and rushed for 71 yards as a freshman in 2021, taking a redshirt. Hemby emerged as the Terrapins leading rusher in 2022, picking up 989 yards and 10 scores on the ground and catching 33 passes for 298 yards. He'd repeat as Maryland's leading rusher in 2023, albeit with a lesser production of 680 rushing yards while pulling in 38 receptions for 349 yards and scoring 7 total touchdowns. In 2024, Hemby had 607 yards on the ground to lead Maryland in rushing for a third consecutive year and caught 40 passes for 273 yards.
Roman Hemby is a running back from the Indiana Hoosiers, standing 6 feet tall and weighing 207 pounds.
The Saints may draft a running back in 2026 to build depth behind Travis Etienne and Alvin Kamara, especially considering Kamara's age and recent decline in production.
Last season, the Saints ranked 28th in rushing yards and 31st in yards per carry, scoring only 9 rushing touchdowns.
Travis Etienne's addition likely means the Saints will not prioritize a running back early in the draft, but they may still consider options like Roman Hemby later on.

Hemby transferred to the Indiana Hoosiers to conclude his collegiate career last season. He was a huge part of a Hoosiers offense that helped the team to an undefeated year and a national championship. Hemby led the Hoosiers with 1,120 rushing yards and scored 7 touchdowns. He was fourth in the Big Ten in rushing, earning 3rd Team all-conference recognition.
An consistently productive back throughout college, Hemby is viewed to have a limited ceiling and is considered an early to mid-Day 3 pick. While he isn't a major big-play threat, Hemby consistently picks up yards as a runner and adds value as a receiver. Those attributes could easily make him a dependable number two back and spot starter, especially in a zone blocking scheme like the Saints prefer.
There is a lot of doubt surrounding Alvin Kamara's future with the Saints beyond 2026. Backup Kendre Miller has only proven that he can't be depended on, while Audric Estime has very limited upside. Devin Neal, a sixth round choice in 2025, has flashed some promise but remains unproven. Don't be surprised if New Orleans adds another back at a similar spot in this year's draft, the area where Roman Hemby is projected to be selected.
