Sean Brady believes Joaquin Buckley's training with Kamaru Usman won't benefit him for UFC 328. Brady sees himself as a different challenge, emphasizing his submission skills compared to Usman's grappling style.
Sean Brady is not expecting Joaquin Buckley to have the right answers to his grappling game at UFC 328, despite training with former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
Usman defeated Buckley (22-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC) by unanimous decision in his most recent octagon appearance in June. The pair teamed up ahead of the May 9 showdown with Brady (18-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. (Paramount+).
Although it's a seemingly positive move for Buckley to put ego aside and train with the man who just beat him with a takedown-heavy strategy, Brady said he sees himself as a different problem.
"I don't think it's going to help him at all," Brady told MMA Junkie. "Anyone with a brain can look and say there's a blueprint (from the loss to Usman), but I'm sure Buckley is looking at me and saying the same thing in his mind. My only two losses have been TKOs. Got TKO'd by Belal (Muhammad), got caught early against (Michael) Morales, so he's probably thinking the same thing that I'm thinking. He's going to try to keep it on the feet, and I'm going to try to take him down.
"I just think I'm a way better overall fighter than he is. He's super explosive on the feet, but I know if I get you on the ground, I can submit anybody in the world. That's the biggest difference between me and Kamaru is that I'm a submission threat. Kamaru's not a submission threat."
Brady, No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie welterweight rankings, is eager to bounce back from a quick defeat to undefeated contender Morales at UFC 322 in November and prove he's still a relevant part of the 170-pound title picture. He is focused purely on delivering inside the octagon, and said he won't let any antics from No. 10-ranked Buckley during fight week throw off his game.
"I don't care what Buckley has to say about me," Brady said. "It's not real with him. He's just trying to sell a fight, which is fine, but I'm just not going to engage in it. I don't care what he has to say. He can say whatever he wants, because at the end of the day Saturday, we're going to fight each other, and then that's when I'm going to let my talking do what it needs to do."
Kamaru Usman defeated Joaquin Buckley by unanimous decision in their last fight.
Sean Brady does not believe Buckley's training with Usman will help him against Brady at UFC 328.
Sean Brady considers himself a better overall fighter and a submission threat, unlike Kamaru Usman.
