Sean McVay has tried to shut down any confusion about Matthew Staffordâs place in the LA Ramsâ quarterback room after Los Angeles drafted Ty Simpson.
The reaction to Simpsonâs selection quickly became about more than the pick itself. McVayâs subdued demeanor sparked questions over whether he was fully behind the move.
Now, the Rams coach has made it clear that his reaction was tied to respect for Stafford, not doubt over Simpson.

McVay explained the situation via Yahoo Sports, insisting his reaction had nothing to do with the rookie quarterback.
âThere were other things that had nothing to do with that, thatâs normal life,â McVay said. âThe main thing was I couldnât be more excited about being able to add him [Ty Simpson], but also understanding of how much I love Matthew Stafford.â
The message was important because Simpsonâs arrival naturally raised questions about Staffordâs future. The Rams used the No. 13 overall pick on the Alabama quarterback, which immediately framed him as the long-term plan.
Sean McVay stated that his reaction to drafting Ty Simpson was due to respect for Matthew Stafford, not a lack of confidence in Simpson.
The drafting of Ty Simpson does not affect Matthew Stafford's position, as McVay confirmed Stafford is still a key player in the quarterback room.
Concerns arose that McVay's subdued demeanor indicated doubt about Stafford's role, which he later clarified was not the case.

But McVay has pushed back on any suggestion that the transition is beginning now. Stafford remains the starter, the leader and the quarterback this team is built around in the present.
McVayâs explanation also made clear why he was careful with his tone after the pick.
âHow respectful you want to always be to just the way things can be interpreted. The demeanor would have been stoic by nature because you are excited, but it is Matthewâs football team,â he stated.
That line is the real clarification. Simpson may be the future, but Stafford is still the now.
The Rams told Stafford about the pick before making it, and the organization has continued to frame Simpson as a developmental quarterback rather than an immediate threat. His role is expected to be learning behind Stafford while competing for the backup job.
That setup makes sense for Los Angeles. Stafford is coming off another high-level season, while Simpson gives the Rams a succession plan without forcing the issue too soon.
McVayâs point was ultimately simple. The Rams can be excited about Simpson without disrespecting Stafford. For now, this is still Staffordâs team.
