Sean McVay was visibly upset after the Los Angeles Rams selected Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. This decision raised concerns about the team's direction and its impact on their Super Bowl aspirations.
Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams hurt their franchise’s chances of winning another Super Bowl after making a wild first-round pick during the 2026 NFL Draft.
However, the most intriguing part of the NFC West team’s decision at pick no. 13 is the disconnect between McVay and the Rams. It became apparent Thursday night that the LA head coach isn’t exactly a fan of the quarterback selected.

McVay appeared to be visibly upset after the Rams spent their first rounder on Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Meanwhile, the decision to go with Simpson created an uncomfortable dynamic for the team’s fanbase considering Matthew Stafford is still the franchise’s starting signal caller.
Oh Boy: Rams HC Sean McVay was visibly PISSED OFF that the team drafted Alabama QB Ty Simpson with its 13th overall pick.

Simpson certainly proved to be a capable starter for the Crimson Tide at moments during the 2025 college football season. Although, Alabama failed to reach the College Football Playoff and Simpson was ranked way behind top QB Fernando Mendoza during the draft process.
Mendoza went first overall to the Las Vegas Raiders and seemingly received great support from NFL legend Tom Brady.
Sean McVay was upset because the Rams selected quarterback Ty Simpson, which conflicted with his desire to win another Super Bowl with current starter Matthew Stafford.
The Los Angeles Rams drafted Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick.
The decision to draft a quarterback instead of adding an elite weapon for the offense may hurt the Rams' chances of winning another Super Bowl.

However, the disconnect between McVay and the Rams appears to be significant based on the head coach’s own comments. McVay revealed that he “did not do a lot of homework” on Simpson at the NFL Annual Meeting .
Sean McVay ‘did not do a lot of homework on Ty Simpson’ – not sure I’ve ever seen anything like this on a 13th overall pick in the NFL Draft… let’s keep an eye on this relationship with Les Snead going forward pic.twitter.com/g52rQYgDe6

“We watch all of our guys,” McVay said to reporter Kay Adams. “I probably haven’t haven’t done as much work on him as you have … there’s a lot of other guys I like there at that 13 pick.”
It’s not a shock why the Rams would want to plan for their future given Stafford’a age. However, the bigger issue is that Los Angeles already plays in one of the best divisions in football.
The Seattle Seahawks won a Super Bowl title last season after a dominant defensive season and Sam Darnold’s emergence. That fact makes the Rams’ championship window even more difficult to succeed in.
McVay’s frustration is certainly warranted given how poor the team was defensively a season ago. Meanwhile, there are many other questions on offense given Puka Nacua’s off-field troubles and Davante Adams’ age.
The Rams are consistently in the playoff mix under McVay, but their latest draft pick creates more drama than answers for the team.
