Seattle Mariners Offense Continues to Flounder in 5-0 Loss to Texas Rangers
SEATTLE — In a common thread this season, the Seattle Mariners' bats were unable to connect when it mattered most in a 5-0 loss to the Texas Rangers on Friday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
It was the Mariners (8-13) fourth-straight loss after getting swept by the San Diego Padres on the road the series prior.
"Just not able to get the big hit at this point to (get the runners on-base) in," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview Friday. "I know these guys keep working at it. It's coming soon. I think the at-bats, like I said, are trending in the right direction. We just got to keep grinding away."
The best opportunity for the Mariners to get runs on the board came in the bottom of the first.
With one out, catcher Cal Raleigh drew a four-pitch walk, center fielder Julio Rodriguez hit a double and first baseman Josh Naylor earned a walk following a 10-pitch plate appearance against Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom.
With the bases juiced, left fielder Randy Arozarena fell behind to deGrom 0-2 and struck out swinging on five pitches. Right fielder Luke Raley stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and struck out swinging on six pitches.
Seattle wasn't able to get another runner past second for the rest of the game.

The best scoring opportunity the Mariners had after the first was in the bottom of the sixth inning. Naylor stood at second after he connected for a lead-off single (he finished the game 2-for-2 and drew two walks) and advanced on a force out hit by Arozarena.
With Naylor at second and two outs, shortstop J.P. Crawford hit a single that could have set the M's up with runners on the corners if not for an inning-ending misplay.
Naylor was waved home on Crawford's hit by third base coach Carlos Cardoza but was beat out on the throw home by Texas left fielder Wyatt Langford.
Seattle finished the game 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base.
While the Mariners attempted to scrape out runs, the Rangers tacked on throughout the game despite a solid showing from Logan Gilbert.
Seattle's starting pitcher finished his outing with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched. He walked one batter, hit another and allowed two earned runs on seven hits (one home run).
Gilbert allowed a lead-off homer to Rangers right fielder Brandon Nimmo in the top of the first and gave up an RBI single to Langford in the top of the third.
The 2024 All-Star was able to work his way out of trouble around those two run-scoring hits and finished with 99 pitches in his outing.
"They didn't make it easy, for sure. It was tough," Gilbert said after the game Friday. "But, in a weird way, that's kind of the fun one sometimes. I feel like they did a good job and I also made some big pitches when I needed to. Definitely not the best. But fought through it and kept us at a decent spot, I feel like."
The Mariners opted to go with relievers Jose Ferrer and Casey Legumina for the final three innings of the contest, which was where Texas tacked on the final runs.
Ferrer allowed an RBI single to Rangers first baseman Jake Burger in the top of the seventh.
In the top of the ninth, Legumina allowed an RBI sacrifice fly hit by designated hitter Andrew McCutchen and an RBI double hit by third baseman Josh Jung.
