Seattle Mariners Unable to Find Runs in Low-Scoring, 2-0 Loss to San Diego Padres
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners were unable to take advantage of the few early opportunities they had and fell prey to the San Diego Padres' high-leverage arms in a game on Friday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
The Mariners (22-24) fell to the Padres 2-0, dropped to 0-4 against their spring training complex partners this season and lost the Eddie Vedder Cup in the process.
The M's also dropped two games back behind the Athletics for first place in the American League West. Seattle currently occupies the third wild card spot in the American League.
Despite allowing two runs, the M's' pitching staff was able to keep San Diego's lineup in check throughout most of the game despite allowing some traffic.
Starting pitcher Emerson Hancock finished with a quality start. He struck out six, walked one and allowed one earned run on five hits in six innings pitched.
Hancock was able to fan six and limited the damage to just one run despite not having his best stuff.
The former first-round pick's sweeper generated just three whiffs and one strikeout. That off-speed offerings has been a major tool in his arsenal this season.
"I just think it's one of those (pitches) where I'm just gonna keep throwing it until you find it," Hancock said in a postgame interview Friday. "One inning it might be there, one inning it might not. I think we have options that we can go to that are able to kind of give you some time in order to find a feel for that pitch. It's one I want to continue to work on. I want to get it better and we keep building on that."
The only run allowed by Hancock came in the top of the fourth. Padres designated hitter Miguel Andujar hit an RBI double to score first baseman , who reached via a walk after a nine-pitch plate appearance.
The final score was 2-0 in favor of the San Diego Padres.
The Mariners have lost all four games against the Padres this season.

San Diego starter Randy Vasquez had a quality start of his own. He fanned three, hit a batter and gave up four hits in six innings pitched.
The Mariners' best opportunity against Vasquez came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Left fielder Randy Arozarena hit a two-out single, stole second and right fielder Luke Raley was hit by a pitch to give the M's two runners on. A popout from shortstop J.P. Crawford left both aforementioned hitters stranded on the base paths.
Seattle had several hard-hit balls that failed to leave the yard or land for base hits.
Crawford, third baseman Brendan Donovan and first baseman Josh Naylor all hit balls to center field that died either right before or on the warning track.
Catcher Jhonny Pereda, filling in for recently injured catcher Cal Raleigh, hit a 103.5 mph that was caught by Padres left fielder Ramon Laureano.

Laureano was able to throw out second baseman Cole Young at second after the liner due to the latter misreading the ball landing fairly.
"We'll keep making adjustments. That's what this game is all about," M's manager Dan Wilson said after the game. "Keep making our adjustments. If we have a process that gets balls on the barrels, we're doing something right. But, again, we also want to get balls that fall. We'll just keep grinding away at it."
After Hancock's day was done, San Diego scored its second and final run in the top of the seventh against reliever Cooper Criswell.
Second baseman Sung-Mun Song grounded out but brought home Andujar from third.
The Mariners were able to generate traffic against the Padres' relievers but were unable to bring any home for scores.
Seattle left one runner on base in the seventh inning, the bases loaded in the eighth and two stranded in the ninth.
