Sebastian Hoeneß: “I’m super happy”
Stuttgart are through to the DFB-Pokal final for consecutive seasons for the first time after Thursday’s dramatic win over SC Freiburg. Sebastian Hoeneß was the architect behind both achievements, and he now looks to repeat last season’s triumph when they face FC Bayern on May 23rd.
"I'm super happy,” Stuttgart’s boss said after the rollercoaster game. "It was a difficult game for us since we needed something to get in. Then we scored the deserved goal in terms of creating chances."
Tiago Tomás’ dramatic winner came in the 109th minute after several saves by Florian Müller kept Freiburg in the tie. "It was a mad goal," rejoiced Hoeneß as two of his extra-time substitutes combined for the all-important goal just when everyone was thinking about a penalty shootout.
"What a goal to send us to the final in Berlin ... I don't have the words. Of course, Thiago (Tomás) does it great. For the Freiburgers, that is very bitter. I want to congratulate them for the outstanding season."
Hoeneß was delighted that they could score the winner before the end of 120 minutes. "There might have been a feeling that it might not be our game today. But I'm very happy that we didn't have to go into the penalties. For my nerves, that was very good.”
Although they will be the underdogs for the final against FC Bayern, the 43-year-old coach is looking forward to the occasion. “We know what’s on the other side. And I'm really looking forward to the game. I'm also happy that it's Bayern.”
Hoeneß has won the 3. Liga during his time as Bayern II coach. He ended the press conference by reflecting on another triumph. The result confirmed that his team will at least secure a place in the Europa League next season. "We are now also safely qualified for the Europa League, and we can make a full attack on qualifying for the Champions League."
