Shams Charaniaâs rise as one of the fastest news-breakers in sports did not just come from inside locker rooms and front offices.
At one point, it extended into an entirely different world, one that unexpectedly helped him stay ahead of the curve during one of the biggest NFL Draft nights.
The path to that edge was not traditional, and it did not come from just basketball circles. Instead, it came from a period where the usual structure of sports reporting simply did not exist.

Speaking to Sports Illustratedâs Jimmy Traina, Charania detailed how his network expanded beyond sports.
âI would just say there were some sources that overlapped. That summer was interesting because I picked up a lot of contacts in different realms,â Charania said.
He added, âI was really bored at different points because my whole life is structured around games and covering the league and everything.â
With leagues paused and schedules disrupted, Charania found himself building relationships outside his usual NBA ecosystem.
Those connections eventually played a role when it came time to break early selections during the 2023 NFL Draft.
The turning point came during the early pandemic period, when sports and politics briefly intersected in a major way.
âAt that point, Donald Trump came up with the âreturn to sportsâ committee and there was a bunch of people on that committee from all of these different sporting lanes,â he continued.
âRobert Kraft, Mark Cuban, etc. I remember digging in on the meetings that were taking place with the return to sports under Trumpâs watch. I picked up some political contacts during that,â Shams concluded.
By following those meetings closely, Charania was not just reporting on sports; he was tracking decision-makers across leagues, ownership groups, and government channels.
That overlap created a unique information pipeline, one that blurred the lines between sports reporting and broader influence networks.
It also explains how he was able to tap into unexpected sources when major events like the NFL Draft unfolded.
For Charania, it was a reminder that breaking news is not just about being plugged into one league. Sometimes, the biggest edges come from the places no one else is looking.
