Shane Baz Bested By Cam Schlittler in Baltimore Orioles' Loss
There's plenty of time left for Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Shane Baz to prove himself, but Monday's start against the New York Yankees did not help. The 26-year-old allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits over 5.2 innings in the 12-1 loss. He also logged four strikeouts against five walks.
Baz ran into trouble immediately, as Trent Grisham hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the first before Aaron Judge smacked a two-run homer 416 feet to right center. The right-hander then retired the Yankees in order in the second before Grisham doubled and Cody Bellinger hit a sacrifice fly in the third.
Baz then bounced back with scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth before the Orioles scored in the top of the sixth, shrinking the deficit to 3-1. However, the Texas native then conceded a run on a wild pitch before Ryan McMahon hit an RBI single.
Baz exited the contest with two outs and runners on first and second. Reliever Yennier Cano then coughed up an RBI double to Jose Caballero before Grisham flied out to end the frame. The score was 6-1 at that point, and it only got worse from there for Baltimore.
Conversely, New York starting pitcher gave up just one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks over 5.2 innings. The 25-year-old tossed five scoreless frames before walking in a run with two outs in the sixth. Reliever then entered and struck out to end the frame.

Baz has two starts with five-plus innings and just one run allowed this season, but he now has four with four-plus runs allowed. The Orioles need the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder to be more effective considering that they gave him a five-year, $68 million extension on March 27. It's the largest contract for a pitcher in franchise history.
Baltimore also sent four prospects and a 2026 Competitive Balance Round A MLB Draft pick to the Tampa Bay Rays for Baz in December. It'll be difficult for the organization to recover right away if a player it invested so much in doesn't pan out.
The Orioles got swept by the Yankees over the last four games, losing by a combined score of 39-10. They're now fourth in the AL East at 15-20, while New York is first at 24-11.
Up next for Baltimore is a road series against the Miami Marlins starting on Tuesday.
