Shedeur Sanders took over social media two weeks ago with the news that he earned his degree from the University of Colorado. However, after further review, he has not obtained his degree yet, according to a report by USA TODAY Sports.
The son of Deion Sanders participated in the ceremony before his actual graduation, which Colorado students "sometimes do if they’re on track to graduate but still need to complete coursework."
The University of Colorado’s official social media accounts celebrated Sanders' being back on campus to receive his degree, and now the posts seem insignificant.
Colorado athletics issued a statement to USA TODAY Sports, saying the institution was “thrilled that Shedeur Sanders came back to Boulder to celebrate commencement with his fellow students.”
“Shedeur completed the requisite number of credits to participate in the spring commencement ceremony on May 2, which is an opportunity available to all CU students who similarly qualify,” the statement by CU athletics spokesman Steve Hurlbert read.
“This is extremely common, not just for student-athletes but for many students who want to be a part of the spring commencement ceremony but who might be finishing their course load in the summer or even following fall."

Sanders left Boulder and was a fifth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2025 NFL Draft. He turned out a Pro Bowl season as a rookie with 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 11 INTs. This gave Sanders a QBR of 18.9, which is the lowest of any starter in the postseason event.
No word on when Sanders will officially finish up his degree at Colorado. His 3.9 GPA is just shy of the record set by Travis Hunter, who maintained a perfect 4.0 before he graduated with his degree over a year ago.
