Sheffield United signed off their 2025/26 Championship campaign in dramatic fashion, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Derby County at Pride Park on Saturday afternoon.
Derby began on the front foot, as might have been expected given the context, and quickly looked to impose themselves. They had already spurned an opportunity that appeared marginally offside when they struck the opener, Sammie Szmodics reacting quickest in the box to turn home from close range following a series of corners.
For much of the first half, United were forced to weather pressure, struggling to gain control as Derby dictated the tempo. But the contest came alive just past the hour mark.
A short back pass from Ward invited pressure, and United capitalised ruthlessly. Gustavo Hamer and Patrick Bamford combined cleverly to carve open the opportunity, before Tom Cannon calmly finished from 12 yards to bring the visitors level.
Despite getting back on terms, Cannon was withdrawn shortly after as part of a triple substitution from Chris Wilder. One of those changes made an immediate impact. Tahith Chong tested the Derby stopper sharply at the near post before Sydie Peck stepped up and unleashed a strike from distance that beat the Derby goalkeeper, who could do little but watch it fly past him and into the net.

Speaking after the match to SUTV, Wilder praised his sideâs resilience: âWe had to weather a tough start because they came absolutely roaring out of the traps. We got through that period and got a foothold in the game, and in the second half we were really good; we defended really well, broke the game up and created good chances.
That one was for the supporters, 100%.â
Reflecting on the overall campaign, Wilder did not shy away from the challenges his side have faced.
âItâs been an incredibly challenging season, by far and away the most challenging for me. At other clubs Iâve had to deal with staff not getting paid for six months, administration; this has been incredibly challenging right the way through from the play-off final.
To get through it, 60 points is a reasonable tally. We wanted to get off the bottom of the division, we did that. We wanted to climb the table, we did that, we just stalled and fell a little bit short.
It isnât easy to pick a team up off the back of what happened and just go and win game after game. The good thing is Iâve known what we need to do; weâre well on the way to doing it, and weâll be better for it.â
Wilder also highlighted key individual contributions on the day, he sated: âBamford was really good, Jairo [Riedewald] when he came on and Joe [Rothwell] added to the young players in the team. I know itâs been difficult and challenging and people will look at 13th and say yeah⊠but 60 points is respectable in my opinion. We wouldâve loved to have taken it to the final day, but we stalled and we havenât been good enough in moments.â
Sheffield United finished the 25/26 Championship campaign in 13th place with 60 points.
