Sherrone Moore probe cost at Michigan reaches $11.5M

The University of Michigan’s hiring of an outside law firm to investigate the culture of the university's athletic department and former head football coach Sherrone Moore has now reached over $11.5 million, according to the latest disclosures released Thursday.

The Chicago-based law firm Jenner & Block charged the university over $2 million for work done in March, according to two invoices released to The Detroit News through a Freedom of Information Act request. One invoice was for $1,887,708.37 and the second was for $172,339.50.

Two sources with knowledge of the investigation but not authorized to speak publicly confirmed that the investigation concluded in April. Paul Corliss, Michigan's assistant vice president for Public Affairs and Internal Communications, did not respond to an inquiry on whether there were more charges yet to be released.

Jenner & Block was hired by Michigan on Nov. 13, 2025, to investigate after Moore's inappropriate relationship with his executive assistant. Moore was fired Dec. 10, 2025, after his executive assistant, Paige Shiver, came forward.

The investigation began looking into allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Moore and Shiver. After Shiver came forward and Moore was fired, the investigation expandedto look into concerns over how Moore was fired, the broader culture of the athletic department that allowed the relationship to continue without oversight and multiple other scandals within the department over the last few years.

Corliss said in February that the investigation would strengthen and address the issues within the department.

“The University of Michigan makes significant investments in athletics, which is a source of pride for our U-M community, and this investigation is being resourced to help strengthen our athletics program moving forward,” Corliss wrote in a statement to The News in February.
